Man kann den "Anton Reiser" von Karl Phillip Moritz mögen, oder nicht. Man kann ihn langweilig finden oder spannend bis in die letzte Zeile hinein. Als der "erste psychologische Roman" im deutschen Sprachraum ist er jedoch ein besonderes Stück deutscher Literatur in Zeiten der Aufklärung.
Dieser Roman wurde zwischen 1785 und 90 geschrieben und er gehört in eine Reihe mit den großen Entwicklungsromanen dieser Zeit. Moritz fängt in ihm ganz präzise die gesellschaftliche Realität des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts ein und beschreibt dabei die ersten zwanzig Lebensjahre des Anton Reiser.

Anton Reiser gilt als erster psychologischer Roman deutscher Sprache und ist zugleich eine maskierte Autobiografie seines Verfassers. Rund 100 Jahre vor Sigmund Freud gab Karl Philipp Moritz eine psychologische Zeitschrift heraus und fertigte Fallstudien dafür an, woraus dieser Roman hervorging.
